Redskins DE Taylor active, Springs out (AP)

Washington Redskins starting left cornerback Shawn Springs was inactive for the season opener against the New York Giants on Thursday night because of a shin injury. Jason Taylor, the defensive end who was traded to the Redskins by Miami, was active for the game and was listed to start. He has only practiced on a limited basis this week because of a knee injury.

Teppo Numminen seems happier than he's been in more than a year. The Buffalo Sabres defenseman, who failed his physical on the first day of training camp in 2007 due to a heart ailment, got a clean bill of health Saturday. "It's nice to be back in the routine and doing things I've always done," said Numminen, who re-signed with the Sabres after undergoing heart valve surgery last season.

The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed Teppo Numminen after the defenseman missed all but one game last season following heart surgery. Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said the 40-year-old unrestricted free agent agreed to a one-year contract. The deal is worth $1.1 million. He was scheduled to make $2.6 million last season after signing a one-year deal, but missed 81 games recovering from September...

AP - Mets left-hander Johan Santana has had arthroscopic surgery on torn cartilage in his left knee. Santana tore his meniscus before his final start but still pitched a shutout last Saturday on short rest against the Florida Marlins to temporarily keep the Mets' playoff hopes alive.

Robredo opens Cincy Masters with win (AP)

Twelfth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain, a winner two weeks ago on clay, picked up his game on hard court Monday to beat nemesis Mardy Fish 6-2, 6-2 in the opening match of the Cincinnati Masters.
