Bills LB Crowell out after knee surgery (AP)

Bills starting linebacker Angelo Crowell will miss Buffalo's season opener against Seattle on Sunday, and is out indefinitely after having surgery on his left knee Thursday. Coach Dick Jauron announced the news after Crowell missed practice, saying Crowell's decision to have arthroscopic surgery came as a surprise.

AP - Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks says quarterback Curtis Pulley has been kicked off the team for violating team rules.

Rams DE Wroten suspended for season (AP)

St. Louis Rams defensive end Claude Wroten was suspended without pay for the season on Wednesday for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Wroten, entering his third season with the Rams, was suspended for four games last season. His draft stock fell in 2006 when he was stopped for speeding and police discovered marijuana in the vehicle.

Guerrero's 2 homers lift Angels (AP)

She's No. 1 again: Serena Williams wins US Open (AP)

AP - On the very first point of the match, Serena Williams hit a backhand so hard that her earring flew off. Turns out she was just getting warmed up. Williams kept pounding away, her shots and shouts getting louder with every stroke. Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards went down with a concussion on the third play of the game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Safety Adrian Wilson blitzed untouched and leveled the second-year quarterback, slamming him to the ground. AP - Tom Tresh, the 1962 AL Rookie of the Year and part of three New York Yankees teams that reached the World Series, has died. He was 71. Tresh died Wednesday after a heart attack, according to the funeral home handling the arrangements.

Crennel insulted by quitting comments (AP)

Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel says he felt insulted by comments by some of his players that teammates quit in last week's loss to Denver. After the Broncos scored 21 points in the fourth quarter for a 34-30 win on Thursday, Browns running back Jamal Lewis accused some unnamed players of quitting.

Detroit takes two-game lead in WNBA finals (AP)

Katie Smith is taking charge on the court, and her energetic effort has helped move the Detroit Shock within a win of their second WNBA championship in three years. Smith scored 22 points and the Shock built a big lead in the first quarter, then hung on to beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 69-61 Friday night and go up 2-0 in the WNBA finals.

Cutler rallies Broncos past Quinn, Browns 34-30 (AP)

AP - Jay Cutler turned Brady Quinn's big night into his own prime-time showcase. Cutler passed for a career-high 447 yards, throwing three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter Thursday night — the last an 11-yarder to Brandon Marshall with 1:14 remaining — to rally the broken Denver Broncos to a 34-30 win over the Cleveland Browns that spoiled Quinn's highly hyped debut as an NFL starter.
